A beautiful, ghostly Dan mask from Liberia.
This is probably an athlete s or racer s mask (gunyeya).
Most Dan masks have narrow eye-slits to disguise the wearer s identity as much
as possible. Racer masks have large eye-holes since the wearer is an athlete
who needs to run around the perimeter of the village. Any young man who can
catch him is entitled to take the mask.
The mask has a silvery patina of age and conserves its raffia beard.
A superb display item. The stand is included.
